According to the suitability evaluation, and further considering the influence of water quality, recharge rate, operation and environmental conditions, the paper evaluates the exploitation potential of Xi'an groundwater heat pump (GWHP). The results show that 31.52% of Xi'an area is suitable, and the development potential of the GWHP is divided into five types. Type I and II mainly are distributed in plain region in the north of Xi'an City as priority areas. Type III is widely distributed in central Lintong, Eastern Yanliang, southern Chang'an, Huxian and southern Zhouzhi as moderate development areas. Type IV is mainly in the hilly area of southwest of Lantian, Southern Lintong and Chang'an, which is unsuitable to develop. Type V is the area of Qinling Mountains and the ban area where should limited GWHP. This study can be used to determine the potential of the development and utilization of GWHP in different regions of Xi'an. The results can be used as reference for the development of GWHP in Xi'an.
