Abstract:Rainfallandwaterlevelfluctuationsarecriticaltriggeringfactorsforreservoirbankfailures.
TakingthesoilreservoirbankinthemiddlereachesoftheYellowRiverasthecasestudy ,thispaperin
vestigatestheeffectsofrainfallactionandwaterlevelfluctuationsonthesourceofsedimentdeposition
andthesoilaccumulationcharacteristicsoftheoffshoredirectioninthereservoirarea.Bymeansofthe
rareearthelement (REE)tracertechnique,conceptbankslopescontainingthegentleslopeof3°,steep
slopeof40°andabruptlysteepsidewallof70°wereinvestigated.Fourdifferentconditionsaredesigned
fortheanalysis ,includingfallingwaterlevel,risingwaterlevel,thecoupledeffectofongoingrainfalland
fallingwaterlevel,andthecoupledeffectofongoingrainfallandrisingwaterlevel.Theresultsshowthat
afterfiveexperimentsinthesamegroupofterrain ,soilproductionsfromthegentleslope,steepslope,
abruptlysteepsidewall,andthetotalsoilaccumulationarestronglycorrelatedwiththedistancebetween
thesedimentdepositionandthebank ,whichcanbeexpressedbythenegativeexponentialfunction.The
abruptlysteepsidewallisadominantsourceofsedimentdepositioninreservoirareas,particularlyunder
theconditionofwaterlevelfluctuations.Theaveragemassofsedimentdepositionfromtheabruptlysteep
sidewallaccountedfor71% ofthetotalsedimentdepositionmassafterfiveexperimentsinthesameter
raingroupunderrisingandfallingwaterlevels.Furthermore ,thesedimentcontributionoftheabruptly
steepsidewalltothemassofsedimentdepositionisbasicallyhighestatthetoeoftheslope ,anditsaver
agecontributionaccountedforapproximately66%.Hence ,itisadvisabletoprotecttheabruptlysteep
sidewallofthereservoirbankswhenimpoundingandreleasing.
