Abstract:Inordertorevealtheeffectsofcoarseaggregateofdifferentsizegradesonthestrainlocaliza
tionofmassconcrete,weestablishedamesoscopicfiniteelementmodeltosimulatethedamageandfrac
tureoffullygradedaggregatemassconcreteundertheconditionsofdifferentmesoscopicmaterialstruc
tures ,soastoanalyzetheevolutionprocessanddistributioncharacteristicsoftheregionofstrainlocaliza
tion.Inthesimulation ,theeffectsofcoarseaggregateofdifferentsizegradesonthestrainlocalization
wererespectivelybroughttolightbychangingthecoarseaggregatedistributionofoneindividualsize
gradewhilekeepingthatoftheothersizegradesunchanged.Numericalresultsshowthatmostofthe
strainlocalizationappearintheinterfacialtransitionzonebetweenthelargecoarseaggregatesandthe
mortar ,andthemaindistributioncharacteristicsofthestrainlocalizationregionismainlycontrolledby
theextralargecoarseaggregate.Moreover ,thelargeandmediumaggregatesplayimportantrolesinthe
evolutionprocessofthestrainlocalizationregiondirectlyorindirectly ,whereasthesmallcoarseaggregate
haslittleeffect.Theresearchfindingscanprovideapreliminarybasisforreducingthesimulationdifficul
tiesandcomputationaldemandbysimplifyingthemesostructureofmassconcrete.
