Abstract:TheclimateregimesinnorthwestChinaaredry,withscarceprecipitationandfrequentdroughts.
Basedonthemeteorologicalobservationdataof136meteorologicalstationsinnorthwestChinafrom1961to
2016 ,weusedthestandardizedprecipitationevapotranspirationindex(SPEI)tocharacterizemeteorological
droughts,linearregression,Pettittmutationtest,andMorletwaveletanalysistoanalyzetheevolutioncharac
teristicsofmeteorologicaldroughtsinnorthwestChina.Theresultsshowthataninsignificantwettingtrendwas
shownoverthewholestudyregion.Fromtheperspectiveofadministrativedivisions ,Shaanxi,GansuProvince
andNingxiaAutonomousRegionshowedaninsignificantdryingtrend,whereasQinghaiProvinceandXinjiang
AutonomousRegionshowedasignificantwettingtrendindiverseseasons.Thechange-pointofmeteorologi
caldroughtsinthewholeregionandindividualprovinces (autonomousregions)weremainlyconcentratedin
the1970s-1990s;however,onlythespringinQinghaiProvinceandtheyearandfourseasonsinXinjiang
AutonomousRegionpassedthesignificancetest.Thedroughtsinthewholenorthwestregionandtheprovinces
(autonomousregions)hadamajorperiodof3-9,10-15,17-23,and25-27years.Fromaspatialper
spective ,thenorthwestregionshowedatrendofdryingintheeastandwettinginthewest.Theresultscan
provideatechnicalsupportfordroughtmitigationandwaterresourcesplanninginnorthweatChina.
