Abstract:Thecausesoffoundationscourofseacrossingbridgesarecomplicated.Topreventwaterdam
age ,itiscriticaltoinvestigatethelocalscoursituationthesebridgesfaceatdifferentconstructionstages.
TakingthemainpilefoundationofHangzhouBayRailwayBridge(underconstruction)asthecasestudy,
weinvestigatedthescourfeaturesandhydrauliccharacteristicsofthebridgeduringdifferentfoundation
constructionstagesbyphysicalmodeltest,numericalsimulationandinsitumeasurements.Theresults
showthatthemodeltestandnumericalsimulationresultsareconsistentwiththemeasureddata.During
thepilefoundationconstructionstage ,thetidalwavesandtorrentshavescouredthesandylayeroff,left
thebridgesitesurfacewithamuddyclaylayer,whichismoredifficulttobesouredoff.70% ofthescour
depthoccursinthefirst30% ofthescourduration.Thecofferdamcanreducetherelativevariationrange
ofshearstressonthebedsurfaceandthesurroundingflowvelocity,resultingintheformationofasilting
areaonboththestossandleeside.Afterthecofferdamislowered ,thescourdepthwillcontinuetogrow
another4m,whichcanfurtherincreasethescourdepthandscopebyabout30%,exceedingthede
signedscourdepthofpilefoundation.Therefore,countermeasuresshouldbeconsideredforscourpreven
