               Abstract:Largescalevegetationrestorationmeasureshavesignificantlychangedthesurfacematerialand
               watercyclecharacteristicsofhydrologicalecosystemsinaridregions,andtheincreasedwaterconsumption
               duetorevegetationposesamajorchallengetothesustainableutilizationofwaterresources.Salixpsam
               mophila,asatypicaldominantplantinMuUsSandyLand,wasselectedastherevegetaionmaterial.Insi
               tumonitoringexperimentsofsingleplantinbarelandand Salixpsammophilalandwascarriedouttoinvesti
               gatethewaterconsumptioncharacteristicsandsoilwaterbalanceofSalixpsammophiladuringthreeconsecu
               tivecompletegrowthcyclesfrom2016to2018.TheresultsshowthatSalixpsammophilahaddifferentroot
               wateruptakestrategiesatdifferentstandagesinresponsetorainfall,soilwaterandgroundwater.Annual
               Salixpsammophilamainlyusedsoilwater,whereasbiennialandtriennialSalixpsammophilamainlylivedon
               groundwater ,butduetothestagnationanddeclineofgrowthoftriennialSalixpsammophila,itsconsump
               tionofgroundwaterwaslessthanthatofbiennialSalixpsammophila.Atthesametime,Salixpsammophila
               wascapableofregulatingpartofthewatersourcetothesurfacesoilwaterreplenishedbyprecipitationinthe
               rainyseason.In SalixpsammophilaLand,evapotranspirationwas1.7~2.3timesofrainfall,thereforerain
               fallinfiltrationcouldnotoffsetthesoilwaterdeficitcausedbyvegetationconsumption ,whichmightinduce
               theriskofgroundwaterdepletion.Ourresultscanprovideadirectreferenceforpolicymakingofsustainable
               ecologicalrestorationinaridandsemiaridregions.
