Abstract:Longperioddisplacementpulseandvelocitypulsewithlargevalueareoftenfoundinnearfault
pulselikegroundmotions ,andtheshorttimepulseenergyconcentrationtheybringforthismorelikelyto
causetheliquefactionofslagintailingsdams.TakingatailingsdamprojectinInnerMongoliaAutonomous
Regionasanexample ,atwodimensionalfiniteelementmodelisestablishedtoanalyzethedynamicre
sponsecharacteristicsofthetailingsdam ,includingliquefaction,permanentdeformation,accelerationand
damslopestability,bymeansoftheeffectivestressmethodofdeformation-porepressurecoupling.Inad
dition ,thepulseeffectofnearfaultgroundmotionsandtheinfluencelawofdeformation-porepressure
couplingontheisodynamicresponseoftailingsdamliquefactionareinvestigatedbythecomparisonwiththe
totalstressmethod.Theresultsshowthattheporepressureofthedambodyincreasessharplyinashortpe
riodoftimeundertheactionofpulselikegroundmotions ,andliquefactionismorelikelytooccur;whereas
thatundernonpulselikegroundmotionsrisesslowlythroughoutthefirsthalfoftheseismicprocess.The
velocitypulseeffectofpulselikegroundmotionsexacerbatesthefailureofthewhiledamstructure.Com
paredwiththetimehistoryofthesafetyfactorofdamslopestabilityundernonpulselikegroundmotions ,
whichexperiencessmallfluctuationsofhighfrequency,thatunderpulselikegroundmotionsundergoes
largefluctuationsoflowfrequency ,withpoorslopestabilityofthetailingsdam.
