Abstract:Inordertoexploresoilwater-saltdynamicinteractionsunderthecurrentconditionofwater
savingimplementationinHetaoIrrigationDistrict,thesoil-water-atmosphere-plant(SWAP)model
wascalibratedandvalidatedbasedonsunflowerfieldexperimentsdata,andthenwasappliedtothesimu
lationofsoilwater-saltfluxandwater-saltbalanceforthe0-100cmsoillayerwiththeplantationof
sunflowers.Theresultsshowedthatthewaterintherootlayerofthesunflowerfarmlandmainlyleaked
downwardinirrigationperiod ,thesoilwaterfluxandsaltfluxwerebothnegativeandthesoilsaltwas
leachedoutfromthissoillayer ;whereasinthenonirrigationperiod,groundwatersuppliedupwardfor
thewateruptakeoftheroots,sothesoilwaterfluxandsaltfluxwerebothpositiveandsaltaccumulated
inthissoillayer.Duringthetwoyearsimulationperiod ,theannualwaterfluxcumulantintherootlayer

soilreached52.5and60.6mm ,theannualsaltfluxcumulantreached-4.5and-4.9mg/cm,and

theannualtotalsoilsaltfluxincreasedby7.5and7.1mg/cm,respectivelyinthe0-100cmsoillay
er.Underthecurrentirrigationregime ,saltaccumulatesinthe0-100cmsoillayer,whichwouldin
turncausetherisksofsecondarysalinizationofsoil.So,itissuggestedthatanextrairrigationshouldbe
conductedattheendofsunflowergrowthperiodinautumninordertoleachoutthesoilsaltforthegrowth
ofthenextseasonofsunflowers.
