Abstract:Inordertostudythefloodcharacteristicsofsmallwatershedsunderextremerainstormcondi
tions ,atwodimensionalfullhydrodynamicnumericalmodelisusedtosimulatethefloodroutingprocess
ofasmallwatershed ,withwhichthehydraulicelementsoftypicalsectionsunderdifferentreturnperiods
werecalculated ,andthefloodriskanalysisofthewatershedwasconducted.Theresultsshowthatthe
peakflowgrowthratecorrespondingtothereturnperiodof500aisthelargest,upto51.38%,which
dropsdramaticallyto7.61% whenthereturnperiodisincreasedto1000a,becausethepeakflow
growthrateincreasesfirstandthendecreaseswiththeincreaseofrainfallreturnperiod.Moreover ,the
maximumwaterdepthincrementofeachsectionissmallerthanitscorrespondingpeakflowincrement ,
andthefloodinundationareaofthewatershedchangeslittlewiththeincreaseofthereturnperiod.Inor
dertomaximizethesocialandeconomicbenefits,itisrecommendedthatthepeakflowunderthereturn
periodof500ashouldbeadoptedforthecalculationofaperturesizeofhighwayandrailwaybridgesand
culvertsinsmallwatersheds.Theresearchresultscanprovidesomenecessaryreferenceforthemanage
mentofextremerainstormsandevaluationoffloodcontrolinsmallwatersheds.
