Abstract:Inordertoclarifytheinfluenceofshearrateonshearstrengthofexpandedpolystyrene(EPS)
beadslightweightsoil,theshearstrengthcharacteristicsofremoldedsoilandlightweightsoilwithdiffer
entmixingratiosatshearratesof0.02 ,0.1,0.2,0.8and2.4mm/minarestudiedbydirectshear
tests.Theresultsshowthattherearetwotypesofrelationcurvesbetweenshearstressandsheardisplace
mentforlightweightsoil ,whicharestrainhardeningandstrainsoftening,andtheyaresubjecttoEPS
beadsmixingratio,cementmixingratioandnormalstress.Thetypeofshearstress-sheardisplacement
relationcurvesofremoldedsoilisstrainhardening.Thehighertheshearrate,thelesstimeittakesfor
thesamplestoreachshearfailureorplasticflowstage.Underdifferentshearrates,theshearstrengthen
velopesoflightweightsoilaremostlybrokenlinetype ,whicharesimilartothoseoftheconventional
structuralsoil.MixingratiohasadecisiveinfluenceontheshearstrengthofEPSbeadslightweightsoil ,
becauseitisalsoakindofstructuralsoil.Itsshearstrength,cohesionandinternalfrictionangleincrease
withtheincreaseofcementmixingratioandthedecreaseofEPSbeadsmixingratio.Theshearratehas
littleeffectontheshearstrength,cohesionandinternalfrictionangleofthelightweightsoil,buthasa
