Abstract:Sidewallspallingcausedbyfreeze-thawcyclesistheinitialstageandmainformofKarezfail
ure.Inordertoexploretheengineeringcharacteristicsofhighmoduluspotassiumsilicate (PS)reinforced
sidewall ,frostheaveandstrengthtestsofPSmodifiedKarezloessafterfreeze-thawcycleswerecarried
out.TheresultsshowthatPScansignificantlyincreasetheinitialfrostheavingwatercontent,andgreatly
reducethefrostheavingamountofthesoilsamples,butthefrostheavingamountdoesnotdecreasewiththe
increaseofPScontent,mainlybecausethelocationofporewaterchangeswiththeincreaseofPScontent.
WiththeincreaseofPScontent ,theshearstress-straincurvetransitsfromhardeningtosoftening.Atthe
sametime,thecurvebeforeyieldpresentsthetransitioncharacteristicsofupwardconvextoapproximatelin
eartodownwardconvex,whichindicatesthatthesoiltexturegraduallychangesfromfrictiontypetosolidi
fiedtype.WiththeincreaseofPScontent,thepeakstrengthofthesamplesincreasessignificantly,among
whichthecohesionincreasesgreatly,becausetheinternalfrictionangledecreaseswiththeincreaseofPS
content.3% PScontentisfeasibleinrestrainingfrostheaveandstrengtheningsidewallforKarez.There
searchresultshavecertaintheoreticalandpracticalsignificanceforthereinforcementofKarezsidewall.
